Questions and Answers

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) allows CLC students, faculty, and staff to request access to materials not available from the CLC library. Other libraries send items to CLC which are then checked out to you to use.

How do I submit an Interlibrary Loan Request?

Step 1. Click Login to Interlibrary Loan.

Step 2.   Select your CLC status (student or faculty/staff), then enter your CLC email username and password. (hint: if your email address is jsmith1@stu.clcillinois.edu simply enter jsmith1 as your interlibrary loan username)

Step 3.  Click on the “Create Request” button

Step 4.  The default request is "Article". Use the "Article" for journal/magazine/newspaper article. If you are requesting a book, DVD, or other type of item, choose "Loan"

Step 5.  Fill in the form fields as completely as possible and submit your request.

Is there a limit on the number of items I can request?

Students and staff may place 4 requests per week. Faculty requests are unlimited.

How do I view articles online?

You will receive an email and/or text message when your article arrives. Log into your interlibrary loan account and retrieve your article from the “available to view” link next to the article request. You may also select the link to your article in the email notification.

Can I renew Interlibrary Loan items?

Yes. Log into your interlibrary loan account and select the “renew” button next to the request you would like to renew. The system will inform you by email and/or text of the new due date if a renewal is available. Still need help? Call us! 847.543.2465

Is there a way to get my database search results transferred directly into Interlibrary Loan?

Yes, when searching databases, keep an eye out for the "Request via Interlibrary Loan" link. Your results will be transferred directly into the interlibrary loan system after you log in.

Why can't I keep Interlibrary Loan books as long as I need them?

For items borrowed from another library, the duration of the loan and any restrictions on using the item is determined by the library sending the item. They also determine if a renewal for the item will be allowed.

How do I change my communication preferences?

Log into your interlibrary loan account and scroll to the bottom. Under “communication preferences” you may select to be notified by email and/or text.

Can I request books/articles from Interlibrary Loan during the summer months?

Of course! Interlibrary Loan operates year-round.
